Responsive Surfaceβ€”Breathing Weather is a digital sculpture that computationally reconstructs the weathering processes of Maltese limestone through real-time environmental data. Temperature, humidity, wind direction, and dust are recorded at ten-second intervals and mapped to geological reaction models such as salt diffusion, oxidation, cracking, and crystal growth. These processes generate a surface that behaves as if it were undergoing continuous erosion.

Rather than producing a static representation, the work exists as a constantly shifting state. Wind direction controls the flow and orientation of particles across the surface; humidity influences diffusion rates; temperature alters colour values; and dust density determines the formation and intensity of cracks. The surface thus becomes responsive, mirroring the slow but relentless processes through which stone is shaped by sea air and climate.

In this work, Son foregrounds translation itself as a structural principle. Environmental movement is captured as data, recalculated through code, and rendered as form. The digital surface does not simulate stone as an image but adopts its temporal logic, accumulating traces of change over time. Weather becomes both agent and material, and the digital environment acquires a capacity for endurance through ongoing transformation.
